Berlin-based Moky Gibson-Lane has performed for former American and South African Presidents Bill Clinton and Nelson Mandela; has recorded pop CDs for Brubeck and Stevie Starr; and has a glowing recommendation from Daniel Barenboim, under whom she completed her studies at the Akademie of the Staatskapelle.
She has performed live in ensembles with such artists as Vadim Repin and Christian Lindberg, and is a regular guest artist on the Arte Channel’s Arte Lounge, which is broadcast worldwide.
Born in Korea and raised in New Zealand, Moky started piano lessons at the age of three and discovered the cello at age nine.
She made her debut with the Wellington Youth Orchestra at age 14 and went on to further solo performances with the Victoria University Orchestra and Auckland Philharmonia. That same year she won the Hanan Music Prize and Duke of Kent Award, both from the Trinity College of Music. Part of the prize was to attend the Dartington International Summer School.
In 1996 the New Zealand Listener magazine named her one of the country’s top six emerging artists.
After hearing her play in 2001, Lynn Harrell invited her to study with him at Rice University. She completed a Master of Music on a full scholarship in 2005, majoring in Cello Performance and German. While at Rice she led the Shepherd School of Music Orchestra cello section and went on to win 1st Prize at the T.M.C Music Competition. She also participated in master classes with distinguished artists, such as Steven Isserlis, Lawrence Lesser, Siegfried Palm, Maria Kliegel, Young Chang Cho, Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi and Valter Despaj.
Moky’s successes in her native New Zealand include prizes at the Gisborne International Music Competition, 2nd Prize at the Young Musician of the Year, 2nd Prize at the Adam International Competition (Chamber Music Section—with Trio Nelehoseves). She has been awarded the Patricia Pratt Scholarship (Victoria University) and is a three-time recipient of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra’s Alex Lindsay Memorial Award.
Moky is founding cellist of the Stabrawa Ensemble Berlin—lead by concertmaster of the Berlin Philharmonic, Daniel Stabrawa. The ensemble performed at the Krakow Music Festival, where Polish media stated they had “broadened the horizon of chamber music-making.” They have given concerts in Berlin, including at the Philharmonie where Sir Simon Rattle was guest of honour on the piano.
She currently performs part time with the Berlin Staatskapelle, dividing the rest of her time between chamber music and other musical projects.
